Built in 1593 by the Republic of Venice, Palmanova is a fortress-city preserved in extraordinary condition. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 2017, Palmanova is a splendid model of an ideal Renaissance city and an example of military architecture. Its star shape is unmistakable and its Piazza Grande is not to be missed, a vast parade ground located exactly in the center of the fortress.

Palmanova is a municipality with 5419 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017) in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. It was laid out as a planned city at the end of the 16th century and its typical star-shaped layout has survived to this day. It has a municipal area of about 1300 ha and is located at an altitude of 27 m asl.
