Very nice round on historic terrain. Near the starting point lies the Odilienberg. He is crowned by Hohenburg Monastery. The place was used as a nunnery until the Middle Ages and later named after Saint Odilia, the founder of the monastery and patron saint of Alsace.
The Odile mountain is today the most important place of pilgrimage in Alsace. The starting point of the tour, Ottrott, lies on the eastern edge of the Vosges. Ottrott is a French commune in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace). It includes the villages Ottrott-le-Haut (Upper Trott), Ottrott-le-Bas (Niederottrott) and Eichwaeldel. There is a lot of half-timbering to see and the outer municipality of Ottrott is rich in medieval castles, which are in different good condition. They are accessible via beautiful, well-walked forest paths. On the round you pass the so-called "heath wall", a more than 10 km long protective wall probably comes from Celtic time. The date is not clear yet.
