Around Anklam extends the nature reserve Lower Peenetal. The Peenetal was formed at the end of the last ice age and is a unique moor area in which peat was mined until 1925.The first of three tours in the Peene Valley begins in the Hanseatic city of Anklam. You can easily reach the city by train, for example in 50 minutes from Stralsund. The fact that Anklam was once a prosperous trading and Hanseatic city can still be recognized by the large Gothic brick buildings, such as the Nikolaikirche with its tower visible from afar.In Anklam you cross the Peene over a bridge overlooking the inland harbor. Then you drive on a great bike path to Ziethen. On partially bumpy roads you drive over Jargelin back to the Peene. In the middle of the nature park Flusslandschaft Peenetal, surrounded by former peat bites ends your short tour. You can either go back the same way by bike, stay on a circa sixKilometers long circular walk along the Menzliner dike trails or borrow a canoe for a paddling tour on the "Amazon of the North" from: kanuverleih-menzlin.de.
