In 2003, the Monte San Giorgio was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain hides up to 240 million years old fossils, many of them in perfect condition. You can admire the important finds in the fossil museum in Meride. In Meride begins the trail around the mountain. On the way, you'll pass 20 learning boards that tell you all about the mountain's characteristics and what events have made the mountain one of the most important fossil sites in the world for the last 350 million years. Incidentally, you can enjoy the silence of the forests you hike through and the breathtaking views of Lake Lugano from a few points. Halfway there is the opportunity to take a leisurely break on the Alpe di Brusino and to fortify yourself, before you hike back to the starting point in Meride.
