In the north of the province of Overijssel lies a sprawling, unspoilt moorland - the Weeribben-Wieden National Park. The original landscape is deceptive: since the 12th century, the vast moorland was changed by human hands. Dikes were built, ditches were pulled and above all peat was mined. This created a small-scale landscape of ponds, streams, canals and lakes. Only in the 1920s, when peat was replaced by better fuel, the man retired.Without human influence, this cultural landscape developed into the largest wetland in Western Europe. On this bike tour you cycle through the northern part of the national park and also to the idyllic town of Blokzijl. Also worth seeing is the village of Giethoorn, which also has the nickname "Venice of the North" with its many ditches and canals.
