At the beginning of the 1930s, the embankment of the Zuiderzee began, which became the IJsselmeer. Since the IJsselmeer was no longer subject to the tides due to its separation from the North Sea, it was much easier to dike and dry large areas - such as the province of Flevoland. By draining the Northeast Polder also something else happened: The two islands Schokland and Urk suddenly became part of the mainland. On our route we will take you to the two former islands and along the IJsselmeer.Especially Urk is perfect for a cozy break. The small fishing village looks back on a centuries-old history and enchants with its narrow streets, pretty brick houses and the small harbor. Our tip: climb up to the lighthouse, because the view of the IJsselmeer is simply terrific up here.
