Emsland Tourismus planned a bike ride.
May 25, 2019
The 70-kilometer tour is dedicated entirely to the exciting world of peatland and peat extraction, which has shaped the landscape of the Emsland since the 19th century. Today, instead, you will discover a very special piece of nature in the Natura 2000 nature reserve and, incidentally, make a detour to the neighboring country of the Netherlands. From the start at Meppen you follow the winding course of the Ems to Groß-Hesepe, where the Emsland Moormuseum is located, where the history of the region can be experienced: from the painstaking life of the first Moorkolonisten on the transformation of nature in arable land with the largest steam plow the world to today's protection of unique habitats. Following the informative moor energy adventure trail, you will then be able to deepen your knowledge as you drive by, while getting closer to the Natura 2000 nature reserve on the German-Dutch border. In the rugged Bourtanger Moor International Nature Park, where peat extraction was stopped decades ago, a special piece of nature awaits you. Over the almost black water of the bog lakes, you can see colorful dragonflies, discover the small insect-eating plant sundew and watch the species-rich bird life from the observation tower. With a little luck, you might even meet the rare short-eared owl that hunts in the clear day, or the goat-herd, a nocturnal and dusk-active species of swallows. This tour is a wonderful nature experience. The contrast is all the better if you come back to the Emsland metropolis of Meppen. Stop in one of the cozy restaurants or cafes on the old market square to strengthen yourself in a convivial atmosphere and let the day fade away with a view of the historic city hall.At 70 kilometers in length, this tour is relatively long. For example, if you want to divide it into two sections, Twist, Bargerveen, Meppen, Geeste or Rühlerfeld are the stage destinations.
