With 25 kilometers and 1,370 meters of altitude difference, this race up to the Zireiner See on Austrian territory is very demanding and therefore more suitable for runners with a certain experience. If you make your way, you will be rewarded richly for every meter: The route takes you to some of the most beautiful places on the Rofan and in Tyrol. The highlight is the "Jewel of the Rofan", the Zireiner See, which is considered the most beautiful mountain lake in the entire region. You start your run on the outskirts of the small village of Steinberg am Rofan, which lies at the foot of the impressive mountains, which you later partly run up. From the start, you will walk along a small mountain path that will take you straight to the idyllic nature of the Rofan mountain range. The first few kilometers of your run go up and down, so you first come to operating temperature. Then the long climb up to the Zireiner Lake begins. The first leads you along a stream through a beautiful mountain forest, past the (unmanaged) Schauertalalm hut and then up steeply until the breathtaking view of the lake opens up in front of you. Here it really pays to take a break. The landscape here is beautiful and you should not miss the chance to cool your feet in the fresh water of the mountain lake.Afterwards you will run downhill again, down to the Eselskar. Scenic it is beautiful here and yet the route is a real challenge: Although (or just because) it goes downhill, your leg muscles will be tested properly. When you see the hut, which is also uncultivated, on the Schmalzklausenalm right next to you, the second ascent of the route begins. Over a partly very narrow and hardly recognizable path you run up to the mountain. Here you can breathe again, enjoy the great view and look forward to the rest of the run - the most demanding part you have done! From now on it is mainly downhill and on the Schönjochalm finally the only working hut with a refreshment is waiting for you. From here it is only a few kilometers to the starting point of the tour. With a running time of around five hours, this route is a great day trip, for which you should plan a drive of about 1.5 hours from Munich city center by car. Since there is only a rest stop on the way, which is also just before the end of the route, you should take enough provisions. If you omit the Zireiner See and run through the valley of the Steinberger Ache, you can shorten the distance significantly.
