Running Highlight (Segment)
Planned by adidas TERREX
Between Recklinghausen and Herne lies the largest stockpile landscape in the Ruhr region: up to 152.5 meters, the "summit" of the Hoheward heap towers above the pot. Once here, among other things in the coal mine Ewald the black gold was brought from the earth - today the old heaps are a great area for walkers, cyclists and of course runners. Here you can earn a lot of altitude in the middle of the Ruhr area and walk on narrow trails instead of smooth asphalt roads. This short tour combines the hilly landscape of the Hoheward heap with an idyllic detour to the Ewaldsee, a former cooling water reservoir that is home to numerous species of birds and a paradise for anglers. Around the lake are two circular routes: one directly on the shore, the other through the surrounding forests of the Emscherbruch. Also the Emscher break is a relic of the mining industry. The numerous swamp and water surfaces were created by subsidence through the coal mining and are today a biotope worthy of protection. The starting point of the round we have placed in the vicinity of the station Recklinghausen South. So you can come by train, or park your car in the parking lot, which is located here. From here, you can get warm on the Emscher Park Cycle Path before turning off towards the heap. From here, you have many options that allow you to vary this round. On the heap there are countless trails and connecting routes, so you can hang a few more kilometers and altitude, if you want. A detour to the top of the heap is of course highly recommended: from there, the view of the Ruhr area is simply terrific. More variety is really not. And if you can not get enough of all this: Right next door is the heap of Hoppenbruch, which is also waiting to be explored by you.
