The richness of the salt trade of earlier centuries is reflected in the southern-style Inn-Salzach architecture - in ornately decorated town houses, cozy arcades and extensive city squares. From Burghausen on the Salzach to Wasserburg am Inn, the Inn-Salzach ArchitekTour is 87 kilometers long. Depending on the bike and condition, this tour can be done in one or two daily stages. The varied theme tour leads from castle to castle through seven special Inn-Salzach cities. In between, there are stately churches and castles, magnificent monasteries and abundant Bavarian foothills landscape to admire. Many cozy beer gardens along the way make the cultural enjoyment perfect. The starting point, the listed old town of Burghausen at the foot of the longest castle in the world, is a prime example of the classic Inn-Salzach architecture that accompanies you along the entire route. The first stage takes you from Burghausen via Mehring and Emmerting through the shady Öttinger Forst to Neuötting, whose town square is dominated by the imposing parish church of St. Nicholas, also known as the "Dom des Inntals".About the pilgrimage town of Altötting with its baroque Kapellplatz and the world-famous Black Madonna, the tour continues into the small Inn-Salzach town Tüßling. Here stands the stately castle of Stephanie Countess Brueges von Pfuel, which is also open to guests several times a year at concerts, garden days and other exhibitions. About polling, the theme tour continues into the old trading town Mühldorf am Inn with the longest Inn-Salzach town square in Upper Bavaria. Many shops in the arcades of the old town, cozy beer gardens, restaurants and sidewalk cafes invite you to stroll and linger. If you want, you can cross over the river between Easter and All Saints with one of the last inn ferries, or continue on the big Inn Bridge to Kraiburg am Inn. On the way, the bathing pond in Oberflossing invites you for a refreshment. The landmark of Kraiburg, the Schlossberg with its small chapel of St. George, rises above the town from afar. The Mediterranean marketplace in the Inn-Salzach architectural style is criss-crossed by many small streets. Around the beautiful fountain there are several restaurants. From Kraiburg we continue to Wasserburg. The path now leads closer to the Inn and past the baroque monasteries of Au am Inn and Gars am Inn. Over hilly moraine land dominated by the last ice age you reach the destination of the tour: the Inn-Salzach town Wasserburg, which is located on a peninsula of the Inn. It is the last pearl of the unique architectural style on the "Inn-Salzach ArchitekTour".Because of their length, the tour is of course classified as "heavy". If you take it easy, put in a lot of breaks or split the route in two stages, this tour is absolutely beginner-friendly and even for casual cyclists enjoyable to master. Here's more information about the region:
