The secret of the Belchen: The 300km² nature park of the Vosges-Belchen, the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges, was founded in 1989. It is home to the highest mountains in the Vosges: the highest is the Grand Ballon (Großer Belchen) at 1,424 m; this is followed by the Hohneck with 1,362m, the Petit Ballon (Kleiner Belchen) with 1,267m, the Ballon d’Alsace (Alsace Belchen) with 1,250m and the Brézouard with 1,228m.The French fortress builder Vauban had the Belchensee (Lac du Ballon) artificially dammed north of the Großer Belchen in 1699. He supplied the water for the construction of the Neuf-Brisach fortress. The old dam was destroyed by floods in the 18th century and rebuilt in the 20th century. The crystal clear water of the 8 hectare lake now supplies the community of Guebwiller with drinking water.Directions
From the parking lot on the Grand Ballon, we hike to the left of the Chalet-Hôtel du Grand Ballon on the rocky footpath up to the 1,424 m high Grand Ballon. The panoramic circular hiking trail (Circuit panoramique) is marked with a red ring.
After about 400 m we continue straight ahead at a junction. From the path we have a wonderful view to the left over the wide Rhine Valley to the Black Forest with its highest mountains, the 1,493 m high Feldberg, the Belchen (1,414 m), the Schauinsland (1,284 m) and the Blauen (1,165 m).In front of the stone pyramid of the monument of the Diables bleus, which commemorates the French mountain troops in World War I, we go briefly to the right. The summit of the Grand Ballon is crowned by a radar station with a large, ball-shaped dome. The station was built to monitor civil air traffic. Your viewing platform is freely accessible and the panoramic view is overwhelming when the view is clear. In the south rise the snow-capped mountains of the Swiss and French Alps; we can even see the 4,810 m high Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe, on the horizon. After enjoying the view, we hike back to the monument of the Diables bleus. We pass it to the left and straight ahead on the red ring a short distance downhill to a junction. There the red rectangle (GR 5) leads us down to the 1,233 m high, farmed Ferme-Auberge du Haag. In front of the mountain inn, on the other side of the D 431 road, we follow the red-white-red rectangle (initially also a yellow rectangle) through the forest. After 500m the red-white-red rectangle branches off to the right from the yellow rectangle of the GR532 and leads steeply down in serpentines to the Lac du Ballon, which is almost 1,000 m high. This small reservoir with its emerald green water is idyllically located in the forest. We walk around the lake on the west side, pass a rest area and after the dam, follow the blue cross on the left through the forest to the Ferme-Auberge du Gustiberg, a good 1.5 km away. From there the red-white-red rectangle leads us back to the Grand Ballon. The scenic hiking trail leads from the farm over the high pasture into the forest and further uphill to the Ferme-Auberge du Roedelen. In front of the old farm we keep to the right and continue to follow the red-white-red rectangle over the high pastures west of the 1,250 m high, wooded Judenhut. The Grand Ballon lies in front of us. After a longer ascent, we reach the Route des Crêtes and hike left on this road back to our starting point, the parking lot on the Grand Ballon.
