Spandau was and always is something special. Although officially a district of the capital, Spandau has retained its own character and independence through its location alone. Few bridges lead to the westernmost west of Berlin, into the old town, which enchants with ancient buildings. Right in the middle of it all is the cozy brewery, which is known and loved far beyond the district boundaries. The S-Bahn lines S3 and S9 go every 20 minutes to Spandau station, your starting point. You are only a stone's throw away from the banks of the Havel, along which you can stroll with relish to the street Am Juliusturm. A quick visit will take you to the imposing citadel made of glowing red brick, one of the best preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe. In the cool and cold season, bats find their winter quarters here and you can even learn a lot about the fascinating animals on guided tours. From there it goes back over the Havel and over the Mühlengraben. After a short round through the Wröhmännerpark you turn to the Brauhaus Berlin. Rustic food, strong beer that is still brewed here, and huge copper kettles will keep you sinking for a while. You shouldn't miss a tasty Havelbräu. If you can break away from the quaint atmosphere, you can walk back through the old town with its beautiful half-timbered houses to the train station.
