You begin the Channel to Channel Path, perhaps obviously, by a channel. The English Channel to be exact. This hike takes you north through the East Devon AONB and into the edge of the Blackdowns, finishing between Kilmington and Axminster. A hilly stage, you can enjoy magnificent views across Lyme Bay as well as inland, across rural landscapes.

Begin on the seafront in Seaton, a relaxed town at the mouth of the River Axe, bookended by large coastal hills. From here, you can admire the chalk-white cliffs toward the neighbouring village of Beer and along to Beer Head. Hike inland by heading west to leave Seaton then turning north and walking uphill through woodland.

The ascent is steep and steady, leading you onto Seaton Down. When you reach the picnic spot, you’ve got a perfect place to take a moment and admire an astonishing view across the sea. Continue hiking over the down before descending into Holyford Woods, a vibrant nature reserve.

Ascend Pratt’s Hill on a bridleway and follow the ridge north. You descend steeply through woods at Ox Hill, all the way to the River Coly. Cross this peaceful watercourse using a footbridge and take a farm lane to Gittshayne Farm. Follow the footpath through the farm’s fields, and do a dog leg to get onto Watery Lane. Walk to the end of the lane, where it turns into a footpath and turn south east past Lexhayne Mill. Hike north along the path to cross the railway and walk uphill to pass New Shute House.

Hike along the track to the north east and then follow the lane leading along the south east edge of Shute Hill. You pass the village of Kilmington, so if you want to overnight here, you can take a detour to the east. Otherwise, continue past and cross the A35, a busy road. Lanes take you past Coryton Farm and across the Corry Brook, leading you to a River Yarty crossing where this Tour ends. Finishing the stage here gives you the option of continuing into stage 2, or hiking east to Axminster. This market town has food and accommodation options as well as a mainline train station and good bus links.
