The Saar cycle path starts in Saargemünd, which means French Sarreguemines and lies just south of Saarbrücken behind the French border. To the starting point in the French city, you can easily reach by train, for example from Saarbrücken. On the banks of the Saar, we start the bike tour on the Saar bike path, which brings you on this first leg to Saarlouis. On the French side of the Saar, you cycle north, but you can always throw your gaze on the other side of the river, where lies Germany. The bike path takes you right along the shore, past forest and meadows and one or the other restaurant, if you want to enjoy the French cuisine before crossing the border into Germany. After about ten kilometers you cycle over the border to Germany. You can tell by the big, white letters on the bike path that greet you with a friendly "welcome". On the well-paved, flat path you comfortably drive along the green banks of the Saar to Saarbrücken. Here, the modern waterfront welcomes you and invites you to take a rest. The old town of Saarbrücken with its baroque buildings is worth a visit. As soon as you have left the city behind, you dive back into the green banks of the Saar with shady trees, small wooded areas, tall grass and lush shrubs. On the way to the stage destination Saarlouis you see in Völklingen on the other side of the river Völklinger Hütte, an old ironworks, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the stage destination Saarlouis you can end the day comfortably in the old town and in one of the restaurants of the Saarlouiser Kasematten.
