Alberobello is a city in the Italian region of Apulia. It is known for its trulli, whitewashed stone houses with conical roofs. The trulli between history and legendAccording to some studies, the trulli arose out of a ruse in the 14th century in order to ... not have to pay taxes! The King of Naples had issued a tax for every newly built village. The Count of Acquaviva, feudal lord of the area, agreed with the settlers not to use mortar to join the blocks from which they built their homes. So they kept the appearance of makeshift buildings that seemingly easy to tear down and therefore not subject to tax.
