This tour is not for the faint of heart. The uphill and downhill slopes alternate in the first half, as does the subsurface. Sometimes asphalt, then again gravel, dirt road or sometimes forest path. Good brakes are definitely necessary here. And a mixture of mountain bike and bicycle. I rode the tour with my trekking bike. Was borderline. Especially downhill. Thick tires are definitely an advantage here (I have narrow road tires). But one by one.The starting point of the tour is the market square in Güssing. First there is a nice round around the Güssing fish pond, through the Ramsar area. After a short passage through the village, the route leads in the direction of St Nikolaus. Here after the church keep right and right up again. Here it goes quite steeply uphill on gravel roads. No problem for an experienced mountain biker. I admit - I pushed my trekking bike most of the time. But it's worth it. Up on Karlberg there is a nice spot in the form of a well-kept house with a rustic bench. and the view is well worth it.The following descent - the same route back to the intersection on the map - also has it in sight. Good brakes are a must here. Then it goes uphill again to the second summit. The next highlight is already on the way there: a little Marterl with a few benches and a fantastic all-round view. Brilliant. Then it's back downhill on gravel paths to of course climb again. The second "peak" is in the middle of the forest and is not marked any closer on the route. So not a real highlight but it should be mentioned: Stettnerberg (301m).This is quickly behind us and off we go to summit number 3 on this day: The Hamerlberg (327m).The way there leads downhill and uphill, past many Kellerstöckl on the ridge at the top. Really picturesque. The Hamerlberg itself is not a highlight either. Neither marked nor anything else special. But if you track like me, you have the altitude on the computer;)Now we pass the Lahmberg (316m), which I didn't really notice, but it seems to be there (for tracking;)Now comes the speedy part of the tour. a really great descent where the wind whistles around your ears, down to Strem. Those who want can also make a detour to the mountain church in Strem or take a break in the break house.Otherwise, the covered Rast und Tratsch Platzl with drinking fountain awaits you in Strem. Here you can take a leisurely rest and refill your drinking bottles. I only had one with me. Had to ration already, so tip: Make sure you take enough water with you.Now comes the pleasant part of the tour. Along the apple tree avenue it goes fairly flat to Urbersdorf to the reservoir. Here I decided on another variant before Urbersdorf and turned right in front of the Marterl and came straight into the church from the east.Turn right here and drive in at the reservoir below.Past the mighty, listed oak at the reservoir access, the beautiful lake lies after a piece of forest and waits for those who like to relax or for tired cyclists like mine. Actually, I wanted to sit down on the table-bench by the parking lot right away, but the youth had just occupied it to play cards. So a little further and there is the next banker. Right on the bank.
Here I first eat a banana and allow my battered body a few sips of water.
Strengthened you go on - following the Clusius path a little, then left up the forest, around the wildlife park, on the gravel parallel path that leads back towards the bike path. Here - at the old farm, not to be overlooked with the horse sculptures, you have a wonderful view of the inhabitants of the wildlife park. Bog oxen, roe deer, stags or is there more? I'll have to find out another time.
I take some photos, I especially like the bog ox. One looks so grouchy.
Now go downhill to the bike path and then right towards Güssing. The rest of the route, 2 kilometers to Güssing, is entertaining and quick. Now I'm looking forward to coffee in the Gasthaus zur Burg. It was nice. And violently. My average speed of 9kmh speaks volumes :)
