This wonderful stage will inspire you with a lot of nature and an impressive excursion into the world of technology. It is best to take enough drinks and a little provisions with you for the hike, because there are few places to stop for a break. There are countless picnic areas or a bench with a view, so that you can always take advantage of the opportunity for a short rest or to linger. You start in Neidenberga, you will soon reach the bank of the Saale and follow it to the Lothramühle. After a steep passage you reach the Klingkuppe, walk through Steinsdorf and finally come to Sankt Jakob, the smallest place on the Hohenwarte reservoir. Until the 16th century, this small, dreamy place was the destination of pilgrimages. The small church and a reconstructed fountain remind of this. You continue through open fields and meadows to the upper Amalienhöhe near Löhma. It belongs to the Hohenwarte II pumped storage plant and, with a capacity of over three million cubic meters, is a huge structure. After almost two kilometers you have reached the mountain slope above the Saale with the eight huge pipelines. You pass it over a pedestrian bridge and have a great view of the 672 meter long pipe runway, the machine house and the lower basin. Below the upper basin there is now a short stretch along the mighty reinforced concrete wall that surrounds the upper basin. The leisurely descent to the dam begins at Oberen Tratschen. There you have reached the stage destination and if you like, you can take a look at the impressive structure and end the beautiful hike with a last look at the wonderful fjord-like water landscape and the blue ribbon of the Saale.
