You can prove your mountain qualities and fitness right at the first stage of the Hohenwarte Stausee Weg. On a good 21 kilometers you will conquer 620 meters in altitude. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with wonderful views of the fjord-like water landscape and the Thuringian Forest. You start very close to the impressive Hohenwarte dam and cross the Saale and the lower basin on a narrow, graceful pedestrian walkway. From the opposite bank the path winds up in serpentines to the stone hill and the Gustav´s Ruh viewpoint. From here you have a magnificent view of the fourth largest reservoir in Germany and the huge dam wall. Only a short distance and a few picnic benches away, the Klinkhardshöhenblick beckons with another wonderful panorama. From here the descent to the lake begins. You first reach the Waldhotel am See and then hike - always with a view of the dam - to the Preßwitzer Spitze. The peninsula is named after a neighboring place that was flooded after the dam was built. Along the shore it goes to the bay of the small village Saalthal-Alter with its campsites and a water sports center. As far as Wilhelmsdorf you now climb the slopes again. On the way you will notice the moss house, a small refuge in whose moss cover curious dormice have comfortably set up. So you better leave your backpack closed when you take a short break here, because while you are enjoying the great view, the furry fellows will otherwise go about your picnic. On the Geiersberg it goes downhill again and you reach your stage destination at the Portenschmiede campsite. If you prefer to plan a day hike, it is best to take the public bus for the return journey in Wilhelmsdorf.
