Bluebells blanket forest floors, colourful wild meadows sway in the breeze beneath, and layers upon layers of soft hills stretch into the horizon – the second stage of the Chilterns Cycleway is a dreamlike ride into the UK’s most spectacular scenery.
Today, you will cover 33 miles (53 km) from Ewelme to Wendover. With 2,165 feet (660 m) of ascent, there are some challenging climbs but your effort is rewarded with the beauty of the Chiltern Hills.
You leave Ewelme via country lanes that climb into the hills. For the next 9 miles (15 km), you ride along the hilltops, enjoying breathtaking views. Look out for red kites soaring above, especially around Watlington Hill. The area introduced a red kite re-introduction scheme a few years ago.
Continuing through the beautiful landscape, you cycle through Cowleaze Wood, known for its bluebells, and Aston Rowant Nature Reserve, before arriving in Stokenchurch. You could stop for a bite to eat at the excellent village pub here.
It’s worth spending some time in Bledlow, a pretty town featured in the Midsummer Murders TV show and the historic town of Princes Risborough before continuing on to Whiteleaf Hill and Great Hampden. You pass the entrance to Chequers, the Prime Minister’s Country retreat amongst the leafy countryside.
Next, Coombe Hill climb rewards you with more spectacular views and interesting historical facts before dropping into Wendover. A thriving market town, Wendover has many attractive historic buildings, delicious eateries and comfortable accommodation options. There is also a train station.
