This circuit takes you along the varied river landscape of the IJsseldeltas. During this Hanseatic tour you cycle through the beautiful polder landscape with its distant views and come through the Hanseatic cities of Zwolle and Hasselt. The bike tour starts in picturesque Hasselt. You will find many hidden treasures here. This Hanseatic city has a historic city center with atmospheric alleys and canals and over 70 monuments. Hasselt is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the Netherlands and part of the famous international pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The symbol of the pilgrims, the scallop shell, made of Bentheim sandstone, can be found in the wall of the old town hall. The route to Zwolle takes you over wide floodplains. The dynamic Hanseatic city exudes culture on every corner. The authentic facades, the city wall, the Sassenpoort, the Peperbustoren (the “Pfefferstreuerturm”) and the star-shaped canal of the city are characteristic of this Hanseatic city. On the outskirts of the city and while cycling back to Hasselt, you can enjoy the wonderful view over the wide polder landscape.
