The Lac du Pontet lies at an altitude of 1,982 meters on the northern slope of the Romanche Valley. The view from up here of the glaciers and peaks of the Meije is stunning. The mood is most beautiful when the mountains are bathed in a very special light as the sun sets and the silence is almost tangible. This easy, around six kilometer long circular hike starts in Villar-d’Arêne, one of the two main towns in the Romanche Valley with its beautiful 19th-century church and a historic mill. After about a kilometer you will reach the small Chapelle Saint-Antoine from 1672. From here you have a great view over the valley of the Romanche.Through Les Cours it now goes in a large arc up to the Lac du Pontet. If you hike here at the right time of year, you will see large plants with yellow flowers all over the meadows. It is the yellow gentian of which the ancients say that the height of the plant indicates the strength of the snow next winter. The Lac du Pontet and the wonderful landscape invite you to linger: Take a little break, enjoy your picnic and let this wonderful atmosphere and tranquility affect you. You then return to Villar-d’Arêne via the small hamlets of le Chazalet and le Chardoucier.
