This walk through beautiful fortified towns, past fortresses and, as icing on the cake, a beautiful view of Fort Loevestein is almost 25 kilometers long. So set aside enough time for it. You start at Gorinchem station, an authentic town with a beautiful old center. If you have enough time, the nice little streets within the fortress are a must to discover.

On the edge of the fortress on the city wall is the De Hoop corn mill from 1764. From here you follow the course of the Boven-Merwede and the Waal. On the other side of the water you see another fortified town: Woudrichem.

A few kilometers further you come to Fort Vuren, part of the New Dutch Waterline, a defense system of more than 60 forts from the nineteenth century. From here you can see Loevestein Castle. In the summer there is a ferry crossing to the other side.

Via Vuren you turn to the north and turn right at the bank of the Linge. You end your walk in Leerdam. Leerdam also used to be a fortress with canals and walls. Now only the Zuidwal remains, with the mouse towers. These were built as small tower houses in 1738 and are still in use today. From here it is only a few hundred meters to the station of Leerdam, from where you take the train back home.
