Discover the long and lively history of Maasbommel: from the Sint-Lambertuskerk and De Tuut steam pumping station to Hernen Castle. The route starts in Nijmegen, easy if you come by train. You cycle along the Kaaisjouwerskade on the Weurtseweg in the direction of Weurt. With the lock you cross the Maas-Waal canal, it is then only a short distance to Weurt. Here you pass the Sint-Andreaskerk, a Roman Catholic church building in Weurt. The church was built in stages between 1895 and 1898 and has a neo-Gothic style. On the dike in the Beuningse floodplains you have a beautiful view over the Waal. But there is also plenty to see closer by: the herbs on the roadside and the bees that come to them, the small villages that you pass, you will be amazed. After Boven-Leeuwen, turn left and cycle straight through the farmland. All the way to Nieuweschans from where you have the water at your side again. Those who are hungry can enjoy a nice lunch in Maasbommel, for example at restaurant De Korenmolen. Maasbommel was the smallest Hanseatic city in the Netherlands in the Middle Ages. The village is located in the Land van Maas en Waal on the Maas and has a long, lively history. Due to its good location, it was an important link in the Northern European Hanseatic Network. You cycle further along the Maas, which is busy with recreation, and the Dijk takes you past Appeltern and then Batenburg. At the Liendense Waard you leave the Molendijk and set course for Hernen. The estate and the Hernense forest are a nice green change from the open dyke you cycled so far on.You might even want to stop at Landgoed Heerlijkheid Leur and take a walk through the woods. It is still a long way to cycle back to the city and there is still a lot to discover in Nijmegen. So keep the time in mind and don't get lost in the woods. The last kilometers on the farmland are fast and you then cycle another 10 kilometers through the built-up area on good bicycle paths. If you still want to discover Nijmegen on foot, all you have to do is look at the ground. There is a green ribbon through the streets that leads you along all the beautiful places. The route is 7 kilometers long, but of course you can also just choose a small part!
