Enjoy the views, cross the Zwarte Water with the ferry at Genemuiden and cycle through the beautiful nature reserves of Weerribben-Wieden and De Olde Maten near Zwartsluis.Start the route in the Hanseatic city of Hasselt, the nearest train station is Zwolle at 13 kilometers by bike. You drive south out of the characterful city with atmospheric facades, leafy streets and hidden spots and soon cycle into the floodplains of Zwarte Water and the Vecht. On the Grindweg you cross the bridge and 200 meters further on you take the bridge to the other side. Then it is a lovely long piece of paddling along the water. In the hamlet of Zwartewaterklooster you cycle between the beautiful old farms. The next piece, Olde Maten & Veerslootlanden, is just as breathtaking. Bird lovers especially can't believe their luck here. After 15 kilometers of cycling you arrive in Zwartsluis. The port of Swarte Sluys was first mentioned in 1398. Zwartsluis has been a transit port for peat from Drenthe to Holland. Today, the harbor is mainly used by holidaymakers.Continue cycling between peat and land along the beautiful Weerribben. In this special nature reserve you will find swamp forest, water, endless reed beds and lots of birds. At the mill of Sint Jansklooster the route bends back to the south. Along the Zwarte Meer you cycle again through the beautiful green floodplains and you cross the water with the ferry to Genemuiden. The ferry sails back and forth 200 times every day, so you never have to wait long (veerpontgenemuiden.nl/home).It is only 8 kilometers from Genemuiden back to Hasselt. The last kilometers fly by with a beautiful view over the Zwarte Water and from the Zwartewaterbrug you also have a beautiful view of Hasselt, where you can stretch your legs in a short city walk.
