This Hanseatic Tour shows the diverse landscape with the Oude IJssel near Doesburg: the three-country point of the Achterhoek, the Liemers and the Veluwe. The route starts in the Hanseatic city of Doesburg, but if you come by train it is easier to pick up the route in Doetinchem. It is a round, so you will automatically end up at the start again.Cycling through Doesburg is like cycling through time. The city originated thousands of years ago as a settlement on the river dunes, and has been a Hanseatic city and garrison town since the Middle Ages. In the fourteenth century, the city was given a new rampart to protect it against the river water that still surrounds Doesburg. Since then, the street pattern from that time has remained unchanged. You drive past the Turfhaven and the marina over the Sluis to the other side of the water. Then you cycle on the beautiful cycle path through the floodplains of the Oude IJssel all the way to Laag-Keppel. If the miller is present, he will be happy to tell you about the Follegamolen and the watermill across the street.About 10 kilometers further you reach Doetinchem. A historic city on the Oude IJssel that is more than 750 years old. Visit the city museum, various art galleries or one of the three windmills. The city center invites you to take a break with the cozy terraces. Every Saturday there is a market where you can enjoy freshly baked fish, a stroopwafel or a delicious cheese sandwich. From the 'land behind the IJssel', also known as the Achterhoek, you cycle through a beautiful, wooded area. North of Doetinchem, the route takes you through the Kruisbergse Bossen. A varied area with coniferous and deciduous forest, fens, fields and hedgerows. The route takes you through the picturesque villages of Hummelo, Laag-Keppel and Drempt back to Doesburg.
