In the footsteps of the Romans, the Via Romana leads along the following cities: Xanten, Marienbaum, Kalkar, Kleve, Kranenburg to Goesbeek and Nijmegen in the neighboring Netherlands.
In 2017 the Via Romana cycle route turned 25!
The starting points of the Via Romana are the former Roman settlements Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum - today Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands - and the Colonia Ulpia Traiana - near Xanten. The basis of the cycling route is the Roman Limes Road, which was laid west of the Rhine to connect the Roman military camps.

    via-romana.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/20200212-Flyer-Via-Romana-2020-final.pdf- Stage I approx. 41 km long -
This first stage begins at the starting point: the parking lot at Ostwall Park in Xanten and runs past the Xanten South and North Seas in the direction of Kalkar.
(No, we did not fly over the Rhine, as drawn by mistake by Komoot 🙄)We plan to follow the Via Romana route in stages to Nijmegen in the Netherlands. However, you cannot rely on the signs. On the way we only saw two signs saying “Via Romana”.
So download the GPS data and follow it up.
Usually we drive from Kalkar to Xanten via the alley path of the old railway line. This route also led us through very interesting areas to the side of it.
What we liked best on this tour was the idyllic town of Haselaer with the small church near Kalkar. It was also nice that we were allowed to visit the Mörmter Franciscan monastery.
We have already ridden the Xanten - Kalkar tour many times, but there was something new on this route 😊

Great tour Willi, very nicely commented and illustrated 🤩
By the way: Even here in the Taunus, the traces of the Romans are still very much present ... such as the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limeswall 🖐😃

Thank you @Wolfram 😊 It's amazing where the Romans hung around 😉
I have to take a closer look at the Limeswall and Limesweg 🤔

@ Egon, that's such a thing with the Roman traces. Sometimes there is also wishful thinking 😉
