A hike through the wild and romantic Schleifmühlenklamm in Unterammergau has at least one great surprise in store for you. It was once the mills of the whetstone makers that made the place famous and rich. During a hike through the gorge, you will learn interesting facts about the history of the gorge at seven adventure and information stations.Your path will also take you past historic grinding mills. Along the torrent you hike on footbridges and steps to the beautiful small waterfalls. Because it is a bit bubbly and sometimes slippery here, a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes are recommended. Exciting: On the second Saturday of the month from June to September you can visit “Schneiderlas Schleifmühle”. Whetstones are made in it for display purposes. After exploring the gorge, you hike up a root path to the Steckenbergkreuz. Somehow the 300 vertical meters of the tour have to come about. The Steckenberg Cross, located at 1,228 meters, offers great views of the Hohen Peißenberg and Ammersee, Unterammergau and the Hörnle group as well as the Sonnenberg and Brunnberg to the south. After a long rest, you will return to the starting point later.
