Towards the end of this stage, the main natural biking route splits into a north and a south variant. The decision is made in Oberjoch after you have climbed the old pass road. This variant leads north via Unterjoch to Jungholz. This Austrian place is completely enclosed by a border with Germany. Only at the very top of the Sorgschrofen summit, which lies south of the village, is Tyrol directly connected. So today you cross the border into the neighboring country.Until then, a total of 1,770 vertical meters are on the program. If that is too much for you for one day, you have many options: For example, you can spend another night in Sonthofen about halfway through the route. But you can also skip the first peak of the day, midday near Immenstadt, and drive directly to Blaichach in the valley. That saves around 700 meters in altitude. Between Sonthofen and Bad Hindelang you also have the option of skipping about 500 meters in altitude and driving in the valley instead of over the mountains. You can leave this variant open and decide spontaneously. Only one thing remains fixed: you cannot avoid the ascent of the Jochpass. The main route leads south out of Immenstadt and right at the beginning it climbs up to midday. If you made it up here early, you can admire the wonderful morning mood down in the Illertal. But the view is also fantastic later in the day. Immediately afterwards you will come to the Bärenköpfle. From this summit, a short sliding passage leads down well-trodden paths to the saddle. A paved path begins there that leads you down into the Gunzesrieder valley. You roll out of the valley to Blaichach on the banks of the Iller. You cross the river to a fairly flat section to Sonthofen. The city is a good place to stock up on supplies or stop by. You will need the energy because there are two more long ascents to come. From Sonthofen it goes straight back up into the mountains. You screw your way up the southern slopes above the Ostrachtal via asphalt and little-traveled roads. The views, especially to the southwest, are terrific. Then you whiz down to Bad Hindelang. There you will also find several shopping and dining options. The Jochpass leads up to Oberjoch from here. The road with the tight curves is popular with motorcycle and racing cyclists. Of course, there is also traffic there and that is not too sparse. The nicer alternative for mountain bikers is therefore the old pass road, which takes you quieter and less hectic, but quite steep. From Oberjoch, the northern variant leads through an idyllic high valley via Unterjoch to Jungholz. Until you arrive at your stage destination, you will pass several Alps, where you can treat yourself to a cool drink before rolling into Austria.
