There is the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, which follows the Ruhr on mostly paved paths from its source in Winterberg to its confluence with the Rhine near Duisburg. Inspired by this, the gravel bike magazine "lifeCYCLE" opened up and created a version of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path on unpaved roads that is made for gravel bikes. This tour describes the third stage of this "Ruhrtal Gravel", which leads from Wetter an der Ruhr to the "Rheinorange" in Duisburg. At more than 96 kilometers, it is quite long, but you can shorten it without any problems: The route repeatedly leads very close to train stations that you can reach quickly from anywhere in the Ruhr area (e.g. Witten, Bochum or Essen). The train is also ideal for the return trip after the one-way tour. The route follows the Ruhr more or less directly. However, it almost completely ignores the touristic Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. It can get pretty crowded on nice days. Not so on this tour: It takes you on unpaved roads over the hills to the left and right of the river and ensures that you get to know the Ruhr area from a completely different perspective. Only now and then do you come across the original Ruhrtalradweg, which is the case, for example, in Bochum Dahlhausen, Essen Werden or Essen Kettwig. Here you can plan small breaks to stock up on provisions. We can highly recommend a refreshment stop, especially in the beautiful old town of Essen Kettwig. You can treat yourself to a piece of cake in one of the small half-timbered cafés or a delicious ice cream here. The last part of the tour is particularly impressive. It is hard to believe that the Ruhr gushes out of the ground as a small trickle a little more than 200 kilometers away. The port facility of Duisburg is the largest inland port in Europe and offers space for considerable transport ships. You can see the destination of this tour from afar: The Rhine Orange is a 25 meter high sculpture that was erected exactly at the confluence of the Ruhr with the Rhine. The perfect bike for this tour:
