“On a gray weekend, we spontaneously think about going for a short hike because our two sons urgently need 'ventilation'. Naturally, our teenager is not particularly fond of it at first, so a pinch of adventure is needed. In order to inspire him too, we drive to the rocket station near Neuss. "Belgian soldiers were stationed on the former NATO military site near Neuss until 1990. Today it is a kind of artists' village, in which there are accessible sculptures, an old watchtower, aircraft hangars, bunkers and exciting architecture to be discovered. On this almost six kilometer long circuit, you immerse yourself in the artistic world that was created on this area. The tour starts at the Insel Hombroich bus stop. There is a lot of exciting things to see along the hike. The private art collection Langen Foundation, which is located on the site of the rocket station, is a particular eye-catcher. Since the missile station was no longer used for military purposes, nature, art, architecture and history have been linked. After your discovery tour of the rocket station, you make your way to the Erftflut Canal. You follow the waterway for a short distance through the idyllic Erftauen before you set course again to the starting point of the tour. Before you get back on the bus, it is worth visiting the Museum Insel Hombroich. The motto of the 21 hectare landscape protection area is: Art parallel to nature. You can find a detailed overview of the Hombroich cultural area here: inselhombroich.de.
