To the east of Roermond is an unspoilt nature reserve full of beautiful paths. Not accessible for the racing bike, but perfect for the gravel bike. Limburg Cycling and Grimpeur.nl are happy to help you discover this beautiful region full of coniferous forests, heaths and peatlands. If you start early here, the sun is still hiding behind the horizon. You are probably alone. It's chilly and when you breathe out plumes of smoke of condensation, you know it's going to be a beautiful day. Click your shoes into the pedals and hear the sand crackling under your gravel bike as you roll away. It will be an adventure! From starting location de Venhof you can explore De Meinweg National Park and surrounding nature reserves. The route is accessible to all levels and runs on unpaved roads without technical obstacles. Ideal for the gravel bike but also fun on the mountain bike. From the starting location you will pass the Iron Rhine. This old inactive railway line makes its way through the nature reserve and is characteristic of the Meinweg, just like the high reddish-brown trunks of the coniferous forest. The cycle paths meander gracefully in between. You also immediately notice that the route is not flat. It is certainly not South Limburg, but there is a difference in height. That makes the route a bit more challenging. From the coniferous forest of the Meinweg the route changes into beautiful country roads towards the German border. This section provides beautiful views. With a bit of luck you will spot some deer in the open fields along the edge of the forest. A highlight is the peat area at the Elmpter Wald. Swinging between water features and reed plumes you imagine yourself in a completely different environment. Especially in the morning when there is still fog, this area is a feast for the eyes. The trails here are flat, but is changing.Hopefully you saved some energy for the final piece. From the Elmpter Wald you cross the Meinweg for the second time. This time you visit the heathland where the paths slowly start to slope between the purple crop. When the last kilometers arrive you will encounter a few nice calf-bitters. The climb after passing the Dalheimer Mühle is the executioner in this route. Here you can empty the tank, because the finish is in sight!Tip: This nature reserve is popular with nature lovers. The paths are shared with other recreationists. So come early, cycle and relax and you might spot some wildlife along the route.
