Your bike tour starts in the middle of the small port town of Wiek and takes you across the Wittow and Jasmund peninsulas, with a detour to Lietzow, to the port town of Sassnitz, which has the largest active fishing port on the island of Rügen. From Wiek you always drive directly along Wieker Bodden to the port of Dranske. At the southern tip of the village you drive on the Wittow peninsula through tranquil little villages and towns. In Putgarten it is worth stopping at the local Rügenhof. It is both the cultural and the tourist center of the place. Even the fishing village itself, with its low thatched houses, looks as if time has stood still here. You continue to the small fishing village of Vitt, which was once an important trading place. The “Heringstrasse”, a formerly important trade route, also ran here. Here the caught fish were once preserved in salt and stored in barrels for the long journey to Altefähr and made ready for transport. You follow the course of the former trade route a little before you make a detour to Breege to the port there, the center of the village. Here, a board posted there tells about the trap fishing, which was mainly used for eel fishing. At the port you have the opportunity to try a freshly caught or smoked eel. After this refreshment, you drive from Breege via Glowe to Sagard and cross a narrow land bridge that separates the Breeger Bodden from the Baltic Sea.Further south past Spycker See, you can see Spycker Castle. The building, which is painted in Swedish red - the so-called Falun Red - is not only noticeable because of its color. Thanks to its four round corner towers, it gives the building a castle-like appearance. Nowadays the castle is a hotel with its own restaurant.Further south you drive to Lietzow, where you can pay a visit to the oldest fish smokehouse on the island of Rügen. Not far from the smokehouse you can take a look at the magical little Jasmunder Bodden. Then the journey continues in the direction of Sassnitz. Along the tracks, the “Silver of the Sea” leads you directly to the port of the city, which is also a state-approved resort. When you arrive at the port, you can pay a visit to the port and fishing museum or drive to the train station to start your journey home. The RADZfatz bus can also bring you back to the starting point.
