At the end of your Transalp there are some exciting highlights to see, winding paths to discover and at the end to experience the Adriatic metropolis of Trieste. The city combines the lively life of Italy with the historical ambience of the former Habsburg monarchy, which ruled the city for more than 500 years, in an interesting mixture.

After you have left Gorizia to the south on bike paths and dirt roads, you will reach the Karst. The limestone plateau stands out from the surrounding landscape. Not only do entire rivers, such as the Reka, disappear in the sometimes bizarrely weathered rock, but also so many paths in the branched labyrinth of paths. For this reason, you should carefully follow the signposted paths and trust the trails that are obviously used rather than some of the advice from your navigation app. The region is very sparsely populated. Refreshments and fountains are rare, which is why you should always use opportunities to refuel with drinking water. The varied route takes you on gravel roads, trails and quiet back roads through the barren landscape of the Karst to viewpoints, military memorials and finally to great high-altitude trails with impressive views of the Gulf of Trieste.

Almost unnoticed, you cross the border to Italy on your alpine cross for the last time after you have crossed the village of Brestovica. Between Aurisina and Opicina, a few really beautiful trails and panoramic paths await you before you finally reach the sea at the old port of Trieste, in the north of the city. Through the Speicherstadt with its historical storage buildings you get to the center of Trieste, where you will discover the Molo Audace after crossing the Grand Canal. In my opinion, there are only a few comparable places in Trieste to enjoy the moment of the arrival of your successful alpine cross in peace before you venture into the turmoil of the city. The historic quay is the perfect place for this.
