Spittal an der Drau is the urban center of Upper Carinthia. Centrally located, between Drautal, Mölltal and Millstätter See, the place is a great starting point for your alpine cross. The transport connection is perfect: On the one hand you can travel stress-free by train or car, on the other hand you can get back home or to your parked car without any fuss.

You start the first day of your alpine cross with a beautiful panoramic stage to acclimatize. On quiet side streets and farm roads you get to the picturesque Weißensee, which awaits you with a refreshing swim and great trails.

It starts on narrow streets in the direction of Goldeck, Spittal's local mountain. 1,150 meters of altitude are ahead of you. The view is picturesque. The Goldeck Panorama Road is a dead end street and also a toll road, which means that traffic is very limited. Alternatively, you can use the lift from Spittal to the top station of the Goldeck valley railway and start your day's stage at 1,800 meters above sea level with a summit tour to the 2,142 meter high panoramic mountain. The forest road on the north side between Schwaig and the mountain station is closed to cyclists, which is why the route does not take the direct route. You can also reach the summit on your own from the toll road by following it to the end and from there on the gravel road to the summit. However, keep in mind that you still have several quite sporty stages ahead of you.

From the Goldeck it goes into the lonely valley of Stockenboi, where the eastern shore of the Weißensee is already located. However, the route does not lead you directly to the lake shore, but instead you discover the picturesque alpine pastures of the Hermagorer Bodenalm and the Fischeralm before you finally reach the south shore of the wonderfully clear Weissensee on a nice trail. The shape of the deep blue lake is reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord. The water is of drinking water quality. Both fish and bathers feel at home there.
At the widest point, the distance between the north and south banks is just 900 meters. Two thirds of the almost twelve kilometer long lake are completely unspoilt and are under nature protection. The entire region has the status of a nature park, which is accompanied by numerous measures for the protection of nature. Nevertheless, great mountain bike trails can be arranged with it. If you are still motivated after the stage, you can discover several beautiful and highly recommended trails on the lake, which you can easily reach with the cable car.

You will find a large selection of overnight accommodations at the Weißensee - including some specialized accommodations for mountain bikers.

Information on the operating times and tariffs of the lifts on the Goldeck and on the Weißensee can be found here:

I drove the first stage today. The junction from Goldeckstrasse towards Stockenboi is unfortunately a closed private road. Nevertheless, we drove it slowly downhill through the picturesque valley. But unfortunately the path ends in nowhere. Maybe there was a way once, now only the wild animals use it. Then we turned and went back a branch and drove further into the valley. But it was still a private route and as far as I know, in Carinthia they are a bit more severe when it comes to punishing. We weren't about to drive here, but we didn't really have an alternative after we had climbed the 1200 m altitude

Hi Markus, It's been a while since I drove the route. The route was still drivable as planned. The descent was a wide gravel road. Can you possibly share the route you have traveled with me? What was the experience of other users like?Thank you for your feedback and have a nice tour!
