The sixth stage on the Greater Ridgeway Trail is a linking section between the Ridgeway and the Icknield Trail, but don’t be fooled: this 19 mile (31 km) section is just as beautiful as the rest. As it’s rather short, you can either enjoy it as a gentle day mid-way through your trip, or tag it onto the days either side.
You’ll ride through the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of this stage as you head for Chinnor, starting from the glorious riverside town of Goring-on-Thames. Climb out on the Icknield Road to start, and continue to climb steadily to the north as you join Judge’s Ride bridleway.
You’ll soon cross over Grim’s Ditch: a prehistoric earthworks that is now home to a long-distance hiking trail, and rejoin lanes heading north. Take on the one major climb of the day as you head up Swyncombe, with gradients of up to 10%. You’ll enjoy the views from up high on the Chilterns for a while, though, as you continue along this high plateau.
Take the road through pretty Cowleaze Wood and over Beacon Hill before dropping off the Chilterns soon after to briefly join the Ridgeway Trail into Chinnor. You’ll find a selection of country inns to overnight here, if you wish.
