The condition of the Saarland's forests has deteriorated further: More than 40 percent of the trees show significant damage, the reason for this being the drought in recent years. The forest is under climatic stress, the weakened trees are great food for pests such as the bark beetle. The infestation is particularly strong around Tholey, and countless spruce trees had to be removed. The newly planted trees are also growing poorly because of the lower water table. The gaps in the forest can be clearly seen from the Schaumberg. You start in the center of Tholey, where the impressive abbey is located - you can visit this either before or after your hike. From the place you go straight into the forest, which has become increasingly drier in recent years. On narrow paths you hike towards Ohlenkopf and after three kilometers you reach the small Blasius chapel. It's worth taking a look inside. Then you follow the path down into the valley of the Theel to Lachmühle, where you turn right. It goes leisurely uphill, switching between forest and field. You can enjoy particularly beautiful views on the Herzweg with its various stations and rest areas. The Herzweg takes you in an arc to the highest mountain in the Saarland, the Schaumberg. A great view awaits you from the 568 meter high plateau, which is increased again at the top of the tower. Your gaze wanders over the wide landscape with the stressed forests. Next to the observation tower, the cozy Schaumberg Alm invites you to take a break before you hike back to Tholey.

The highest mountain in Saarland is the Dollberg at around 695m. However, the St. Wendel district "shares" this with the Trier-Saarburg district
