On your hike over the karst and cave nature trail in Breitscheid, you will discover a fascinating landscape. Mysterious caves, a brook disappearing underground, a jungle-like gorge - you will definitely not get bored here. The circular route is very well signposted and gives you a great insight into the phenomenon of the karst, which you can discover both above and below ground. Karst is limestone formed by erosion, which can sometimes take on bizarre forms. A little tip: It is worth taking a headlamp with you.Your hike starts in Erdbach, which you can easily reach by bus. The nature trail starts soon and leads you through the karst to a total of 24 stations. By the way, you can book guided hikes on the karst and cave nature trail at the community of Breitscheid and learn even more interesting facts about the area. A little later you will reach the large and small stone chamber. These are two impressive karst caves that you can take a look into. The cave remains were formed over 350 million years ago as part of a mighty coral reef made of limestone rocks. After two more kilometers you will reach the maypole sinkhole, which shows where the water has loosened the limestone over thousands of years and created access to a widely ramified cave system. A moment ago it was still there, the small, rushing Erdbach, but suddenly it disappears on a swirling stream. You will also experience this great phenomenon in other, smaller streams in the area. After this shock, you will recover a little later in the beautiful alley gorge, where you can experience a veritable sea of flowers, especially in spring. And at some point the lost stream reappears in a different place - as refreshing spring water.
