On this tour around the Schmalwasser Reservoir you will discover many superlatives: The highest climbing rock in the Thuringian Forest, the highest dam in Germany and a maximum of wonderful nature and relaxation. The dam is less than two kilometers from the start of the tour near Tambach-Dietharz. You start at the Schmalwasser parking lot on Oberhofer Straße near the dam. Your path leads you first through dense forest. Nevertheless, you can see the mighty dam from afar if you let your gaze wander through the tree tops. It is a gigantic 76 meters high and has been in operation since 1998. Nowadays it is used for flood protection and energy generation. In the middle of the lake there is also a tower from which drinking water can be taken if necessary.Along the reservoir you hike past the Wolfszahn, a striking rock, and reach the idyllic Meister-Eckhart-Blick rest area. It continues to the Falkensteinsee on the Falkenstein. There is also a mountain rescue station there. The Falkenstein rises a proud 96 meters above the lake. You can only reach its summit as a climber, but the view from below is also quite impressive. From here it goes up to the 813 meter high Großer Buchberg, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the reservoir when you reach the top. This is followed by the way back to the starting point of the hike.
