The Ilm Valley Cycle Path actually begins in Allzunah at one of the source streams of the Ilm. So that you can comfortably get to the starting point of the cycle path, we have also included the way there for you in this first stage. From Rennsteig train station you cycle about two and a half kilometers on an almost flat stretch through the Thuringian Forest until you come to the Ilm spring in Allzunah. The Ilmtal cycle path begins here. The Ilm spring in Allzunah is not the only source of the Ilm. The Lengwitz is one of three source streams from which the Ilm draws its water. So for the first few kilometers you cycle nicely downhill along the Lengwitz through the Thuringian Forest until it merges with the other two source streams, the Taubach and Freibach, at Stürzerbach. Together the three brooks form the Ilm. We continue on the mostly slightly sloping cycle path past meadows and through beautiful forest following the Ilm in the direction of Ilmenau, the first stage destination. If you still have energy after the short 18 kilometers long first stage, a visit to the Kickelhahn, Ilmenau's local mountain, on which there is a lookout tower, is worthwhile. The tower is the landmark of Ilmenau and offers you a great view. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was inspired by the beautiful view to write the poem “Wanderer's Night Song”, found this in his day.
