ADFC Köln planned a bike ride.
December 12, 2020
Tour to the Cologne ghost wheels in memory of people who died on the bike in Cologne traffic. From Rudolfplatz it goes north on the Hohenzollernring to Friesenplatz. At the north-west corner of this is the latest ghost bike in Cologne when this tour description was written. It commemorates a 55-year-old cyclist who was run over by a truck and killed on May 14, 2020.Since #RingFrei has still not been fully implemented, there are various cycle routes on the Cologne Rings to the north to Rheinuferstraße.South on the banks of the Rhine. There have always been a lot of people walking and cycling here. Corona has made it even tighter. Instead of creating more space for bicycle and pedestrian traffic, politics and administration are working on expanding Rheinuferstraße to two lanes throughout for motor vehicles. At the level of Tacitusstraße, a ghost wheel reminds of a 27-year-old cyclist who was run over by a tram in 2016.The next ghost bike is under the Rodenkirchen bridge. Here a cyclist did not survive a collision with a car in 2018. The confusing crossing will have been one of the causes of the accident. We leave the banks of the Rhine and come to the Rodenkirchen bus station. A 63-year-old man was run over by a bus in January 2019. He died at the scene of the accident. A right-turn ban for vehicles is signposted here, although the public transport buses have to turn right to reach the bus station. We continue to the west. Then through the outer green belt and Marienburg north to Schönhauser Straße. Again to the west, through the foothills park and yardstick. The next bicycle memorial is located at the Gottesweg / Rhöndorfer Straße intersection. An 80-year-old man was killed in an accident here in 2017.Continue on Sülzburgstraße to Kerpener Straße and to the Gürtel until we turn right into the park along the Rautenstrauch canal. Go through the green to Universitätsstraße. Here, at the intersection with Aachener Strasse, a ghost bike is reminiscent of the 26-year-old Gianluca, who was killed in 2015 by a car flying over the intersection due to significantly excessive speed. After a short stretch on Innere Kanalstrasse, take Weinsbergstrasse and Oskar-Jäger-Strasse to the junction with Vogelsanger Strasse. Here, in 2014, Kerstin was killed by a truck turning right.Through Ehrenfeld side streets it goes to the corner of Subbelratherstrasse and Innere Kanalstrasse. In 2017, a 51-year-old cyclist was run over by a truck driver on a free-running right turn.We drive through the green spaces along the Innere Kanalstrasse to Stammheimer Strasse in Riehl, where in 2019 a bus overtook a cyclist so narrowly that it ran over her when she turned left into a house entrance. Not far from here, on Boltensternstrasse, there is another free-running right turn where a 56-year-old cyclist was killed in April 2018 because a truck ran over her.Along the Niehler belt it goes through the park to the Mülheimer bridge and over it into the right bank of the Rhine. Once there, along the Clevischer Ring, head north into Markgrafenstrasse. On the corner of Langemaß, students have set up a ghost bike for their 63-year-old teacher who was run over by a truck.Berliner Straße and Deutzer Freiheit lead us to Auenweg, where a ghost bike commemorates 19-year-old Miriam, who was the victim of an illegal car race while riding on the bike path in 2015.We continue to Deutz via the Auenweg. From there we drive over the bridge, Heumarkt and Neumarkt back to Rudolfplatz, where the sad circle closes.
