Today it will be educational, because on your tour you will drive past a sunken village and experience the origin of hydropower on the Saale - and at the end a sweet surprise. With an altitude of 750 meters, the area around Saalfeld shows you once again that you can cycle uphill not only in the Alps. First you start leisurely with an ascent over the Rote Berg to Großkamsdorf. On your way you will pass the former Kamsdorf mine, where you can ride a mountain bike underground today. Pretty crazy!
It continues in the direction of Bucha and a little later on forest and meadow paths into the Saale valley to Alterbucht. On nice summer days you can take a long break with bathing fun or take a little ride in a rowboat or pedal boat. Along the banks of the Hohenwarte Dam you now drive over the Lettersberg to the Presswitzer Spitze and now it's getting very historic: Here, in 1938, the village of Presswitz was completely flooded to make room for the dam.
In the direction of the dam, you continue directly on the water and your journey is loosened up with three crossings of the Saale. Once you drive over the dam, then over the Saalesteig in Hohenwarte and later over the Eichicht dam. Here you can enjoy the wonderful views of the dam's waterworks and the mountain landscape once more.
The Saale cycle path takes you to the idyllic villages of Eichicht and Breternitz. Now you follow the Saaletrail to Reschwitz. At the entrance to Saalfeld it is worth taking a look at the magnificent plank wall - a 100 meter high national geotope with an information point. At the end of the tour you can buy delicious chocolate and the famous Saalfeld nougat bags in the Sarotti factory outlet and review the great tour.
