  • The Pico Ruivo is with 1,862 meters the highest peak in Madeira. It dominates the breathtaking mountain landscape of the Madeiran Massif Central, formed by rugged peaks, vertical cliffs and deep valleys. The signposted mountain trail PR1 leads from the third highest mountain Pico do Areerio over narrow

  • One of the most spectacular high mountain tours there. We followed the ridgeway to Encumeada to the bus from about 15.15 clock. Great views especially to Cural and again and again beautiful rocks.

  • Great climb with beautiful views. The trail is very well secured, unfortunately there is a lot of cement on the way. The origin of a mountaineering is lost a bit.

  • Committed in the opposite direction on January 5, in the best weather. If you have got used to the steepness of the slopes and the precipices you can really enjoy the spectacular landscape. An absolute highlight.

  • I have read different recommendations, is it possible to hike the tour with children (9.14)? (These are experienced and pack tours of 17-20 km and about 600 meters in altitude)

  • I would say yes, the kids shouldn't be afraid of heights. The tour is very varied for the children because of the tunnels.

  • Absolutely great route that should not be underestimated! Start as early as possible so as not to miss the midday sun. The prospects are incredible.

  • Very beautiful and well-developed route - but beware: poor physical condition, lack of sure-footedness & fear of heights are an exclusion! Also take light windstoppers with you, as the temperatures and the wind can change around every corner.

  • So shouldn't you do this tour as a beginner?

  • I walked the tour in December 2022. It is very varied and has many spectacular views. I found them beautiful, but extremely exhausting.

  • Nice tour! A lot of stairs/steps. A friend who was with us made it back and forth with distraction. But she had sore muscles for a few days that we only went on easy hikes.

    So you can handle it!
