This leisurely tour through the hilly landscape of the Westerwald is only 32 kilometers long and takes you into the area of the pits. Mining has a very special tradition here. The tour starts in Wirges, not far from Montabaur. In the middle of the village is the church of St. Bonifatius, the so-called Westerwald Cathedral. Then you cycle through Siershahn, which is surrounded by many pits. Minerals, ore and silver were once mined here, today it is mainly clay that is processed into ceramics. Then a steeper stretch comes up to the Dreieichenkreuz. You meander through the villages and in between through wonderful, natural forests. In Montabaur, it is worth taking a short detour to the old town, where you can treat yourself to a coffee break. From there it is not far to your starting point in Wirges.
