Adventure 1 – Day 1 – Catbells hike
Ford Weekend Adventures planned a hike.
October 8, 2020
This hike visits some iconic spots in the Lake District, including Derwentwater, Catbells, Maiden Moor and High Spy.
With 13.4 miles (21.5 km) of distance and 2,725 feet (830 m) of elevation gain, this is a fairly challenging Tour. However, your efforts are rewarded with first-class hillwalking and spellbinding panoramic views.
From Inside Out Camping, you make a short-but-sharp ascent over Castle Crag. Legendary fell walker and author Alfred Wainwright once said: “If a visitor to Lakeland has only two or three hours to spare, poor fellow, yet desperately wants to reach a summit and take back an enduring memory of the beauty of the district, let him climb Castle Crag."
You then hike north to Derwentwater, a stunning stretch of water surrounded by majestic upland scenery. After walking around the western shore, you begin a sublime climb over Catbells.
They might be small by Lakeland standards, but what Catbells lack in height they certainly make up for in character. As you hike over the hills, enchanting views over Derwentwater greet you on one side and glorious fells rolling away into the distance are visible on the other side.
As you venture over Maiden Moor and High Spy, the views keep coming thick and fast. At the quirky abandoned slate quarry, you begin a steady descent back to the campsite.
