After we successfully finished the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg the day before with a wonderful hike through the Bodetalschlucht (komoot.de/tour/255327784) on stage 5 from Altenbrak to Thale, we are now on the Brocken bypass from Torfhaus to Königshütte to explore the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg with all its variants.According to the website, the Brocken bypass specified as a stage is 35.1 km (36.7 km according to the official hiking guide) and 396 meters of altitude (ascent 396 m; descent 734 m) by the planners. For the seventh day of our hike, we decided to split the hike into two stages (Torfhaus - Braunlage and Braunlage - Königshütte) and approach the whole thing in a relaxed manner. After a few hundred meters we cross the B 4 to get to the fairy tale path, which leads us through sparse high forest with small boggy islands. Right at the beginning of the fairy tale trail we not only come across the sign "Welcome to the legendary mountain wilderness", but also the warning sign about dangers from dying trees. We are curious what to expect. In the end, as is so often the case, it depends on the eyes of the beholder: we are walking through a section with countless, thousands of dead trees ... and that makes you very sad. But this section also allows a second perspective - we also see an incredible amount of fresh green - young trees, undergrowth, grasses. This second view, in which the gaze is not only directed upwards, but also straight ahead or slightly downwards, shows very clearly "The forest is not dying - it is changing"!The path itself is a varied mixture of natural paths, root paths, boardwalks and a boardwalk and takes us to the Oderteich with the witch's stairway station "Frau Holle" and the ten granite obelisks as ice breakers. From here, the path runs along the Rehberger Graben to the Rehberger Grabenhaus forest restaurant, where the Grabensteiger was previously required to live in order to prevent damage to the ditch. Like stage 2, the path is lined with numerous interesting boards on the subject of the "Upper Harz water shelf".When you arrive at Rehberger Grabenhaus, it is worth reading the information board "Construction site nature" in peace. This explains very well what happened to the Harz Forest and what is currently happening: "This is where nature builds the new wilderness".About 500 m further, the water of the Rehberger Graben disappears in a tunnel, the Geseher watercourse. Shortly afterwards we reach the nature reserve "Bergwiesen bei St. Andreasberg" with its historical pastures belonging to the meadow protection program. On the way to the Rinderstall forest restaurant, we pass the "Ants" witches' staircase, before a root path leads us down to the cattle stable. From there we climb 125 meters from the Oder Valley up to the Silberteich, before the last kilometers to Braunlage.
