After our arrival in the morning we begin our hike on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg from Osterode to Thale in the afternoon. In the next 8 days we will not only explore the main route, which consists of 5 stages, but also the various variants in order to get a complete picture of the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg.We extend the very short stage 1 from Osterode to Buntenbock to the duck swamp.Stage 1 is themed
"On ancient donkey paths: up from the edge of the Harz"
The beautifully designed starting point of the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg is located directly at the Bleichestelle parking lot. From there, the Hundscher Weg leads us out of Osterode after a short time and climbs steadily with a moderate gradient for the next 10 km. The Hundscher Weg is a historical trade route on which donkey caravans used to pull bread and grain to Clausthal and transport iron ore. But also the Kiepen women, who were also known as the "Harz Camel", carried their loads of up to 40 kg ("Kiepen") up and down this path. After a little over 2 km, the first Hexen-Stieg station is reminiscent of the Kiepen women. After about 4 km we reach the donkey square, where the donkey caravans once stopped. A very beautiful Köte (Köhlerplatz) and at the same time a mandatory stamp from the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg. Unfortunately the second wooden donkey is no longer there. Here we also meet the Harzer BaudenSteig (see also our hike from October 2019 komoot.de/collection/900161/-harzer-baudensteig-harz). The path continues to climb and shortly afterwards we reach the Körnigs Eck (also known as the "Lerbacher Window"), where a set up picture frame allows a beautiful view of the valley, and a good kilometer further the Marienblick into the Lerbachtal and the Mangelhalber gate. From there we continue up to the Ackerblick, Antonsblick and Dorotheenblick viewpoints to the Heidelbeerköpf, the highest point of this stage at 605 meters, which we reach after around 10 km. This is where the watershed runs between Söse and Innerste.Stage 1 ends at the refuge at the beginning of the Bärenbrucher Teiche. On the embankment of the Bärenbrucher Teich we cross the Innersteich, following Stage 2, and hike upstream to the Upper Nassewieser Teich and from there on to the Innerstequelle as far as Entensumpf. We pass numerous information boards about the Oberharzer Wasserregal cultural monument.
