The Buchstein with its sandstone towers is 411 m high and is located on the southern edge of the city of Bayreuth, still within the urban area.
The forest surrounding the rocky areas consists of nutrient-poor, dry pine and birch stands with warm, sunny forest fringes, which butterflies and other insects like to visit.
The area covers an area of around 13 hectares and around 2/3 is owned by the Free State of Bavaria; 1/3 belongs to the hospital foundation of the city of Bayreuth.
The distinctive Rhätsandstein rock towers and individual rocks on the actual summit of the Buchein are particularly characteristic and valuable.
