This Tour around the Lauwersmeer follows the contours of the closed sea arm, located on the border of Friesland and Groningen. The Lauwersmeer is an immense paradise of water, islands, reed lands and bird species. From the Noordergat you cycle clockwise around the Lauwersmeer. It won't be long before you see Scottish Highlanders and Konik horses grazing. In the summer months, the large grazers are accompanied by cows and horses from local farmers. This is to preserve the landscape variation.Via the bike path along the Zoutkamperril you arrive in the town of Zoutkamp. Near the village you pass the provincial border. A viewing plateau is located less than ten kilometers away. This is the place to spot a white-tailed eagle.Because bird watching is really what it is all about in the Lauwersmeer. Bird migration is in full swing in spring and autumn. In one day, according to Staatsbosbeheer, you can see as many as 30,000 thousand barnacle geese fly over. You drive all the way to the Wadden Sea via the Frisian part of the National Park. From the seawall you have a beautiful view of the Wadden area. This is the place to just sit down and look around. Today's final destination is on the other side of the dike.
