What began as a small wooden fortress at the confluence of the Elbe and Alster 1200 years ago has become one of the richest cities in Europe: Hamburg, formerly Hammaburg. How the Hamburgers got so far, the route explores. It begins on the hill of early medieval Mellingburg, at the Mellingburger lock today, follows an ancient trade route through the Alster Valley and happens in the city center several places that were relevant for Hamburg's rise. ZEIT Wissen has questioned historians and archaeologists about it, and the interviews with them are linked to various highlights in the city. The hike can easily be spread over two days: on the first day from the Mellingburger Schleuse to the Jungfernstieg, on the second day from the Jungfernstieg to the Elbphilharmonie. A trip to the Museum of Hamburg History, which is located on the second part of the route, you should definitely plan - there are excellent city models from different eras.
