Time for a little history, of course in connection with beautiful nature. The 72 km long long-distance hiking trail Saale-Horizontale leads strong-willed hikers across the Saale valley and back again. With this tour - and the first stage of the horizontal - we want to give you a small taste of it.It starts in Jena and directly at the first signs for the long-distance hiking trail. You hike steadily uphill on stone steps and forest paths and keep looking at the eastern parts of the city you just left behind. You are now standing in front of the Lobdeburg castle ruins, where you have earned a break at their beautiful rest areas. Then it goes up a little further, in many turns over the Johannisberg horizontal. You walk through magical black pine and beech forests and marvel at one or the other steeply sloping rock slope.Once you have reached the plateau of the Johannisberg and enjoyed the view, you will come to the lime tree and shortly afterwards to the Fürstenbrunnen. In the constant up and down and with a few amazing views you hike through the varied landscape to a rubble channel, called a student slide, the crossing of which requires some surefootedness and a head for heights. Then it goes along the rock and through a beech forest to the Ziegenhain valley with its stone cross. The tour ends here - you can descend to Ziegenhain and take bus number 16 and then tram number 5 back to your starting point.
